## About this program

# Careers in Science (CiS) Intern Program

Careers in Science is the California Academy of Sciences' flagship youth program: a multi-year, year-round, paid internship and youth development program based at the Academy's museum, aquarium, and research collections in Golden Gate Park. Interns from San Francisco communities underrepresented in STEM - including girls and students of color - enter as rising sophomores or juniors and continue through high school graduation, getting paid above minimum wage to learn, teach, and do science.

## What You'll Do

- Conduct fieldwork outdoors on Saturdays during the school year and on weekdays in summer
- Facilitate science learning experiences for Academy visitors on the public museum floor
- Attend interactive trainings twice a month on science communication and STEM careers with practicing professionals
- Receive guidance on financial literacy and the college application process across your multi-year tenure

## Who Should Apply

San Francisco residents attending SFUSD schools who are 9th or 10th graders enrolled full-time, can obtain a valid work permit, and can commit to year-round attendance including after-school, weekend, and summer hours. Applications are currently closed and reopen in February 2027 for the next cohort entering in June.

## Outcomes

CiS interns graduate with years of paid science work experience at a major research museum, trained science-communication skills, fieldwork exposure across California ecosystems, and a strong college-preparation support network - the Academy counts CiS among the nation's model STEM-equity youth programs.
