## About this program

# Living Latin in Rome High School

Living Latin in Rome High School is the Paideia Institute's residential summer program in Rome for secondary students of Latin. For two weeks participants live in a residence in the city, read Latin literature in the places it describes, and practice using Latin as a spoken language. Mornings are typically classroom work on texts; afternoons move the class into Rome itself, so a passage about the Forum or the Pantheon is read on site rather than in translation.

## What You'll Do

- Read Latin authors in small classes led by Paideia instructors
- Practice speaking and hearing Latin - no prior spoken-Latin experience is required, only reading ability
- Visit archaeological sites, churches and museums across Rome as part of the coursework
- Live and take meals with fellow Latin students from around the country
- Take excursions to sites in and around the city included in the program fee

## Who Should Apply

High school students who have completed at least the equivalent of two years of high school Latin (or one year of college Latin). Paideia states the program is also challenging and interesting for students who have studied Latin for many years, and encourages students of all grade levels, including graduating seniors, to apply. Applications require a form and a teacher recommendation.

## Outcomes

Students finish with markedly improved Latin reading fluency, first-hand knowledge of Roman topography, and a cohort of classics-minded peers. The published cost is $5,500 covering tuition, housing, meals, site visits, course materials and airport transfers; airfare is separate, and full and partial need-based scholarships are available.
