## About this program

# Youth Crew

Youth Crew is The Marine Mammal Center's multi-year service-learning program for high school students in the greater Bay Area. Based at the Center's Sausalito hospital in the Marin Headlands, it gives teens hands-on training in animal care and education at the world's largest marine mammal hospital, which rehabilitates and releases sea lions, elephant seals, harbor seals, and sea otters.

## What You'll Do

- Train in animal husbandry and support the rehabilitation of rescued marine mammals
- Engage Center visitors in marine science and ocean conservation education
- Serve as camp counselors for Camp Sea Quest, the Center's marine science day camp for younger children
- Learn about veterinary science, wildlife research, and science education from Center staff
- Return across multiple years, taking on increasing responsibility as you advance

## Who Should Apply

High school students in the greater Bay Area who can commit to regular shifts at the Sausalito hospital, are comfortable with hands-on animal work, and want to explore careers in veterinary science, research, or science education. The Center also runs a free Stewardship Saturday program for high schoolers exploring ocean conservation careers, which is a good entry point.

## Outcomes

Youth Crew members finish with documented service-learning hours, direct marine mammal rehabilitation experience under professional supervision, and preparation for careers in veterinary science, research, and science education - an unusually deep credential for a high school volunteer.
