## About this program

# Slingshot Challenge

The Slingshot Challenge is the National Geographic Society's free annual video challenge for young people, launched in 2022 with Allen Family Philanthropies to surface the next generation of environmental problem-solvers. Participants distill an environmental solution into a single compelling minute of video.

## What You'll Do

- Create a one-minute video showcasing an innovative solution to one of five critical challenges: protecting nature, cleaning the air, restoring the ocean, reducing waste, or addressing climate change
- Work solo or in a team of up to six, all aged 13-18, in English or Spanish
- Submit through the official platform during the annual window (the 2026 cycle closed February 6, 2026)
- Earn a digital certificate for every qualifying submission and an invitation to a virtual recognition event

## Who Should Apply

Students aged 13-18 anywhere in the world who care about the environment — no filmmaking experience or research lab required, just a real idea and a phone camera. It is one of the most accessible ways for a high schooler to put an environmental project in front of a major scientific institution.

## Outcomes

A panel of experts selects a small number of projects to receive funding awards of up to $10,000 USD to further their work, and standout entries gain National Geographic recognition. For many students the challenge doubles as the public debut of an ongoing sustainability project or club initiative.
