## About this program

# Shoals Marine Laboratory High School Courses

Shoals Marine Laboratory is a remote field station on Appledore Island, six miles off the coast of Maine, operated jointly by Cornell University and the University of New Hampshire. Its precollege courses let high school students live and work as field scientists while earning Cornell University credit in one-week, two-week, or two-and-a-half-week sessions across the summer.

## What You'll Do

- Take college-level courses in marine biology, marine environmental science, coastal habitat field research, marine mammal biology, or shark conservation
- Deploy oceanographic equipment and collect water samples from the lab's research vessels
- Survey the rocky intertidal zone and travel to adjacent islands to observe seal and seabird colonies
- Dissect sharks and rays to learn their anatomy, fish for mackerel and bottom fish, and observe whales on their foraging grounds
- Live on the island alongside undergraduate students and resident researchers

## Who Should Apply

Students who have completed grade 10, 11, or 12 and earned the equivalent of a B- or above in two year-long high school science courses. Applicants who fall short of that grade requirement may submit a teacher or counselor contact who can speak to their circumstances. International students must already hold a current F-1 visa, since SML cannot sponsor visas.

## Outcomes

Students earn 2 or 4 Cornell University credits per course, posted through the Cornell registrar and transferable to many institutions, plus a transcript-backed record of residential field research at an established marine station.
