# Seed Crew

Seed Crew is The Food Project's entry-level summer youth program and the front door to its youth pipeline (Seed Crew, then Dirt Crew and Root Crew). Each summer the organization hires roughly 72 high school students from deliberately mixed cultural, racial, economic, and geographic backgrounds to farm together in Greater Boston and on the North Shore. Everyone is paid - The Food Project treats the paycheck as both economic support and a way to make the work a real job rather than an errand.

## What You'll Do

- Work mornings on The Food Project's urban and suburban farms in Beverly, Boston, Lincoln, Lynn, and Wenham, planting, weeding, harvesting, and packing
- Distribute thousands of pounds of produce through farmers' markets, CSA shares, and hunger relief partners
- Spend most afternoons in interactive workshops on sustainable agriculture, food access, and social justice
- Practice leadership, teamwork, and workplace skills on a crew whose members come from very different neighborhoods and schools

## Who Should Apply

Students ages 14-17 who will be 14 by June 1 and have completed 8th grade by July 1, and who can commit to every day of the full program. Applications require a recommendation and must be submitted before the posted deadline. The program draws from Greater Boston and the North Shore, so applicants need to be able to reach one of the farm sites.

## Outcomes

Seed Crew alumni finish with a documented paid summer job, working knowledge of food systems and food justice, and eligibility to return to The Food Project's advanced youth crews and leadership roles.
