## About this program

# Washington State Legislature Page Program

Each legislative session, hundreds of Washington students serve a week as pages in Olympia. Pages are sponsored by a state senator or representative, work the chamber floor and capitol campus, and attend a dedicated Page School every day of their week - one of the longest-running state civic education programs in the country.

## What You'll Do

- Work on the chamber floor and carry the flags at the opening of each day's session
- Distribute materials across the capitol campus, assist legislative offices, and deliver messages
- Attend Page School daily to study the branches of state government and the legislative process
- Draft and debate a mock bill with the other pages serving that week
- Earn $65 per day in the House of Representatives or $67 per day in the Senate

## Who Should Apply

Students who are at least 14 years old and have not reached their 17th birthday, with a parent or guardian's permission, a teacher and principal recommendation, and sponsorship from a senator or representative. Sessions run January-April in odd-numbered years and January-March in even-numbered years. Students may page one time only, in either chamber.

## Outcomes

Pages leave with a week of paid work inside a functioning state legislature, a personal relationship with their own legislator, and a working knowledge of how a bill actually moves - the kind of civic credential that reads very differently from a classroom simulation.
