Ceres Connection Student Naming Program

Organization: MIT Lincoln Laboratory

Program Overview

A recognition program that names asteroids after top U.S. math and science students and teachers.

Ceres Connection is a recognition program run by MIT Lincoln Laboratory that honors outstanding achievement in mathematics and science by naming minor planets (asteroids) after top students and teachers. Working with major national competitions such as the Intel/Regeneron Science Talent Search, the Intel/Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), and the Broadcom MASTERS, the program selects high-achieving participants and educators to receive this unique distinction. Each honoree has a minor planet, discovered by MIT Lincoln Laboratory’s LINEAR program, officially named in their honor after approval by the International Astronomical Union. This is not a competition you apply to directly; instead, students become eligible by excelling in partnered science and math competitions, typically at the national or finalist level. Honorees receive a certificate and citation describing their named minor planet, offering lasting recognition for their academic accomplishments and contributions to STEM. Participation is open to students and teachers recognized through Ceres Connection’s partner competitions, most of which serve middle and high school students across the United States.
