Program Overview

The world's largest academic competition for high school students in competitive debate and speech events, culminating in the NSDA National Tournament with over 5,000 competitors.

# National Speech & Debate Association (NSDA) National Tournament The National Speech & Debate Association (NSDA) Tournament is the largest academic competition in the world, drawing over 5,000 high school students to compete annually in a comprehensive range of debate and speech events. Whether you argue public policy, perform dramatic interpretation, or deliver original oratory, the NSDA national stage is the pinnacle of competitive speaking and debate for high school students. ## About NSDA Founded in 1925, the National Speech & Debate Association (formerly known as the National Forensic League) is the premier organization for competitive speech and debate in American high schools, serving over 150,000 students and coaches across more than 4,000 member schools. NSDA's mission is to teach students to research deeply, argue clearly, listen critically, and communicate persuasively—skills that are foundational to success in any field. Research consistently shows that competitive speech and debate students outperform non-participants on academic assessments, college readiness measures, and career success indicators. ## Competitive Events NSDA's national tournament features a comprehensive menu of competitive events: **Policy Debate**: Two-person teams argue detailed policy resolutions with extensive evidence. Known for its intense research and rapid-fire delivery. **Lincoln-Douglas Debate (LD)**: Individual one-on-one value debate focused on philosophical and ethical propositions. Considered the most accessible entry point for serious debate. **Public Forum Debate**: Two-person teams debate current events topics released monthly. The fastest-growing event in high school competition. **Congressional Debate**: Students simulate U.S. Congress legislative procedures, writing and arguing bills and resolutions. **Original Oratory**: A 10-minute original speech on a topic of the student's choosing. Tests research, argumentation, and platform speaking skills. **Informative Speaking**: Data-driven speeches on educational topics, using visual aids. **Extemporaneous Speaking**: 30-minute preparation time to deliver a 7-minute speech on a current events question. **Dramatic Interpretation / Humorous Interpretation**: Performed literary pieces, memorized and performed solo. **Duo Interpretation**: Two-person team performing a literary piece together. **Poetry Interpretation**: Readings of published poetry with theatrical performance elements. ## Qualifying for Nationals To compete at the NSDA National Tournament, students must earn NSDA points through local and regional tournament wins and accumulate enough points to meet the qualification threshold, or win a qualifying bid at a designated qualifying tournament. Schools must also be active NSDA members. ## The National Tournament Experience The NSDA National Tournament takes place each June in a host city (recent locations have included Dallas, Louisville, Las Vegas, and Phoenix). The tournament spans approximately one week and includes: - Preliminary rounds - Elimination rounds - Award ceremonies - College fair components - Alumni networking events ## Why NSDA for College Applications? Few extracurricular activities build as many universally valued skills as competitive speech and debate: critical thinking, public speaking, research, persuasion, and poise under pressure. Top colleges—especially those with pre-law programs, political science departments, and debate programs of their own—strongly value NSDA experience. Qualifying for and competing at the NSDA National Tournament is a meaningful achievement. National semifinalists and finalists are recognized by top universities as exceptional communicators and scholars.
