Deadline months below reflect recent cycles; deadlines repeat annually — always verify on the linked listing, which shows when we last checked. ## The national flagships **[Research Science Institute (RSI)](/extracurriculars/research-science-institute-rsi)** — six weeks at MIT doing original research with a mentor, capped by a written paper and symposium talk. The most famous free program in the country and among the most selective anywhere. Applications close around December–January. **[MITES Summer](/extracurriculars/mites-summer)** — MIT's rigorous six-week residential program in engineering and science for rising seniors, with a strong record of launching first-gen and underrepresented students into top STEM programs.
