# American Legion Boys State Boys State is one of the most prestigious civic education programs in the United States, operating since 1935. Selected high school juniors spend a week building a complete mock state government from the ground up — forming political parties, drafting legislation, holding elections, and governing. ## What You'll Do - Create political parties and campaign for elected offices (governor, legislature, courts) - Draft and debate legislation in realistic committee and floor sessions - Learn the mechanics of democratic governance through hands-on participation - Network with future leaders — many U.S. Senators, governors, and CEOs are Boys State alumni ## Who Should Apply High school juniors nominated by their local American Legion post. Students should demonstrate leadership, academic achievement, and interest in civic engagement. The program is completely free. ## Outcomes - Deep understanding of state government operations and democratic processes - Prestigious credential recognized by selective colleges - Selection opportunity for Boys Nation in Washington, D.C. - Lifelong alumni network of accomplished civic leaders
