LifeSmarts National Championship

Organization: National Consumers League

Program Overview

Free national consumer knowledge and personal finance competition for high school teams, testing real-world skills in health, technology, the environment, consumer rights, and personal finance.

# LifeSmarts National Championship LifeSmarts is a free national competition program run by the National Consumers League that tests high school students on practical, real-world consumer knowledge—skills every young adult needs but rarely learns in school. Teams of five students compete in topics including personal finance, health and safety, technology, environmental issues, and consumer rights, advancing from online play to regional competitions and ultimately the national championship. ## What Is LifeSmarts? LifeSmarts was created on the premise that "street smarts" matter as much as academic knowledge. The program fills a critical gap in high school education by teaching students how to: - Read a credit card agreement and avoid debt traps - Understand their rights as a consumer - Evaluate product safety information - Make informed healthcare decisions - Navigate digital privacy and cybersecurity risks - Make environmentally responsible purchasing decisions The National Consumers League has operated LifeSmarts since 1994, and the program now reaches students in all 50 states. ## Competition Structure **Online Competition** (October–March) Teams register and compete in daily online quizzes on the LifeSmarts platform. Questions rotate across five topic areas. Teams accumulate points throughout the season, and top scorers advance to state championships. **State Championships** (typically March–April) Top online competitors from each state meet for a live, in-person competition featuring: - A "Jeopardy!"-style buzzer round - Team challenge rounds - Individual question components State champions advance to nationals with travel expenses typically covered. **National Championship** (April–May) State champions from all 50 states plus DC compete in Washington, D.C. at a multi-day event that includes: - Round-robin team competition - Elimination bracket play - Awards gala and recognition ceremony - Capitol Hill visits and consumer advocacy briefings ## Why LifeSmarts Is Valuable LifeSmarts teaches genuinely applicable life skills with real-world consequences—financial literacy, health decision-making, and digital safety—that most high schoolers never formally learn. Beyond the competition, the program delivers education that will serve participants their entire adult lives. For college applications, LifeSmarts is particularly compelling for students interested in business, public policy, consumer law, public health, or environmental studies. It demonstrates practical intelligence alongside academic achievement. The program is **completely free** for all participants, including state championship travel expenses for qualifying teams. ## Who Should Participate? LifeSmarts is ideal for students who: - Are curious about real-world financial and consumer issues - Participate in DECA, FBLA, or economics/personal finance courses - Want a competition that rewards practical knowledge, not just academic recall - Are interested in law, business, public health, or policy careers Teams can be organized through school clubs, consumer education classes, or independently through the LifeSmarts online platform. No specialized prior knowledge is required—the program is designed to teach as it tests. ## How to Register Registration opens in **September** at the LifeSmarts website. Teams of five students register through their state coordinator. The online practice and competition platform provides all study materials. All competition materials and state-level travel are provided at no cost.
