The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards is the nation's longest-running and most prestigious recognition program for creative teens in grades 7–12. Over $450,000 in scholarships and cash awards are given annually to young writers and visual artists.
## About the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards is the nation's oldest and most prestigious recognition program for creative students in grades 7–12. Since 1923, the program has celebrated student creativity and provided scholarships, awards, and recognition to millions of young artists and writers. ### Award Details - **Total awarded**: Over $450,000 in direct scholarships and cash prizes annually - **Gold Portfolio**: The top honor; award includes $10,000 scholarship - **Silver Portfolio**: Runner-up portfolio award; $1,000 scholarship - **Individual category awards**: Cash prizes and recognition - **Regional Medals**: Gold Key (advance to national level), Silver Key, Honorable Mention - **Application**: Through school or regional affiliate; scholastic.com/artandwriting ### Eligible Submission Categories **Writing**: Short Story, Poetry, Flash Fiction, Novel Writing, Personal Essay/Memoir, Humor, Journalism, Dramatic Script, Science Fiction/Fantasy, Persuasive Writing, Spoken Word **Art**: Photography, Film & Animation, Comic Art, Digital Art, Drawing & Illustration, Fashion, Jewelry, Mixed Media, Painting, Printmaking, Sculpture, Video Game Design ### Eligibility Requirements - Currently enrolled in grades 7–12 (ages 13–18) - Attending school in the United States (public, private, or home school) - All work must be original and the student's own creation ### How to Enter Students submit work through their regional affiliate. Find your region at artandwriting.org/affiliate-programs/. Many schools have Scholastic Art & Writing Award coordinators.
