What Is Seattle Aquarium Youth Ocean Advocates?
Youth Ocean Advocates (YOA) is Seattle Aquarium's teen volunteer and conservation community for students in grades 9-12, including Running Start, GED and homeschool students. The School Year 2026-2027 interest form is open. Submitting the form is not the full application: students first attend an online information session, then receive an application, and selected applicants complete a group interview.
YOA has three participation paths. Tides offers broad digital and periodic Seattle-area engagement. Currents adds hands-on Aquarium interpretation, classes, marine-science and field activities, professional development, behind-the-scenes experiences and community action. Breakers is an advanced project path for experienced Currents members working with conservation professionals. New school-year YOAs generally participate January-June; returning members participate October-June. Summer participation generally runs late June-early September. Both sessions require at least eight activities of about three to five hours each.
