We took a different approach: we analyzed all 1,599 verified programs in the ExtracurricularHub catalog — every cost, deadline, format, and location — and pulled out what the data actually says. Here are the seven takeaways that should change how you plan.

1. Two-thirds of everything is free

1,066 of 1,599 programs (67%) charge no participation fee. The idea that a strong activity list requires money is simply not supported by the catalog. Cost is a filter you choose, not a wall you hit. Browse the free directory to see for yourself.

2. The paid-program market is two markets

Among the 533 paid programs, the median cost is $600 but the average is $2,556. That gap means most paid programs are modest one-time fees — while a small tier of residential pre-college programs charges $5,000+. Know which market you're shopping in before you budget.

3. Prestige and price are inversely related

The most selective programs in the catalog — the ones with acceptance rates under 10% — are overwhelmingly free, because they're funded to find talent (RSI, MITES, government academies, funded research placements). Open-enrollment programs, by contrast, are usually paid. If a program admits everyone, it can't differentiate anyone.

4. March is the month that decides your summer
