What Is Cooper Hewitt National High School Design?
Cooper Hewitt's annual competition invites U.S.-resident high-school students to respond to a community-centered design challenge. The completed 2026 prompt asked entrants to document an existing design important to their community and propose an original design supporting that community's future. Students could enter individually or in teams of up to three. The organizer has not yet published the 2027 prompt, dates, or rules.
The 2026 competition had no entry fee. Its online entry required original images, concise written responses, alt text, and a signed parent or guardian form for every participant, including entrants who were 18 or 19. Files were reviewed anonymously except for state. GenAI was permitted only with detailed disclosure and possible process verification. Students with disabilities could use written or MP3 descriptions and request other modifications.
