Minnesota State High School Mathematics League

# Minnesota State High School Mathematics League Founded in 1980-81 by Macalester professor Wayne Roberts and modeled on the East Coast math leagues, the MSHSML runs Minnesota's original statewide math competition. The League states its purpose plainly: "to identify students who have exceptional mathematical ability or interest, to give them recognition and encouragement, to bring them together with similar students, and to give them the opportunity to study topics not commonly taught in the high school curriculum." ## What You'll Do - Compete in five in-person meets across the season - for 2026-2027 these run November 2-3, December 7-8, January 11-12, February 1-2, and February 22-23 - Contest both individual events and team rounds, with schools placed in Divisions and Sections - Qualify for the State Tournament, scheduled for March 15, 2027 - Compete for a spot on the All State Math Team, which the League sends to regional and national tournaments - Consider the League's residential summer math programs (SMI) for 7th-12th graders ## Who Should Apply The League is "open to all qualified students attending schools in Minnesota and schools on the border of Minnesota" - 178 schools participated in 2019-2020. Students join through their school's math team rather than individually, so the first step is asking a math teacher whether the school is a League member or wants to start a team. Schools pay an annual team registration fee. ## Outcomes League competitors get a full season of graded competition rather than a single test date, statewide individual and team rankings, and a documented path to the All State Math Team and national tournaments.
