Coca-Cola Scholars vs Gates Scholarship: Which Program Is Right for You?
Coca-Cola Scholars is an achievement-based award judged on leadership, academics and service, open to seniors whatever their family income. The Gates Scholarship is for Pell-eligible seniors and pays the cost of attendance that other aid leaves. Eligibility decides this one, and so does the calendar: the two deadlines fall two weeks apart each September.

Coca-Cola Scholars vs Gates Scholarship: the short answer
These are different kinds of money for different students, so start with eligibility. Coca-Cola is achievement-based, not need-based: 150 seniors a year receive $20,000 each, judged on leadership, academics and service, and you need a 3.0 GPA. Gates is for seniors from low-income households: you must be Pell-eligible with a 3.3 weighted GPA, and it is last-dollar funding for the full cost of attendance your other aid and the Student Aid Index do not cover. The timing today matters more than either: the 2027 Coca-Cola application closes Wednesday, September 30, 2026, at 5 pm Eastern, and its first phase asks for no essays, no transcript and no recommendations. The Gates deadline for this cycle was Sept 15 2026, so current seniors have missed it; juniors should plan for next year's. If you are a senior who meets Coca-Cola's rules, apply this week.
Program details

Inside Coca-Cola Scholars
Four phases. The first is a short online application with no essays; by the end of October about 1% are named semifinalists and write essays, send a transcript and a recommendation in November. From the ~1,200 semifinalists, 250 regional finalists interview with Coke Scholar alumni and staff, and 150 are invited in April to the required Coke Scholars Weekend in Atlanta. The $20,000 can be used for up to 10 years, and the Foundation keeps scholars connected afterwards.
Inside Gates Scholarship
One long cycle. A profile opens in July, the application closes in September, semifinalists are named over December and January, finalists interview in March and scholars are selected in April, with awards paid from July. The money is whatever your cost of attendance is after other aid and the Student Aid Index, for full-time study toward a four-year degree, and the program also works with scholars and their colleges through graduation.
