What Is Human Rights in the 21st Century: Challenges?
This is the current Columbia University Pre-College course corresponding to the legacy title International Politics & Human Rights. It introduces the philosophical foundations, law and practice of human rights, international organizations and enforcement mechanisms, then asks students to evaluate evidence about whether those systems work. Topics can include cultural relativism, surveillance, autonomous weapons, climate change and environmental threats.
The course is discussion- and analysis-based and includes asynchronous work between meetings. Because the material can be sensitive, Columbia recommends that students enroll only if they have the maturity and willingness to engage thoughtfully. In-person students may need business-casual clothing and government-issued or school identification for possible field trips.
