What Is George S. & Stella M. Knight Essay Contest?

The SAR High School Essay Contest invites U.S. citizen and legal-resident students in grades 9-12 from home, public, private and parochial schools to write one original 800-1,200-word researched essay. The topic must center on an event, person, philosophy or ideal associated with the American Revolution, Declaration of Independence or framing of the U.S. Constitution. Entries are judged on historical accuracy, clarity, organization/topic development, grammar, spelling and documentation.

Students enter through an SAR chapter near their residence. Where no chapter participates, an authorized state or judge-at-large route may be available. Chapter winners advance to state competition and one state winner can advance nationally. Only one entry per student is allowed each contest year. Current state deadlines range from December 1 through January 31, with most on December 31, but a local chapter may impose an earlier date; the student must contact the listed local or state chair.
