# NJCL Online Exams The National Junior Classical League sponsors four online exams that sit alongside the better-known national Latin and Greek exams and cover ground those exams do not: the National Classical Etymology Exam, the National Roman Civilization Exam, the National Latin Vocabulary Exam and the National Hellenic Civilization Exam. They are administered online through schools by the American Classical League, in two windows each academic year, and are open to students whether or not they are enrolled in Latin. ## What You'll Do - Take the National Classical Etymology Exam, testing Latin and Greek derivatives and their use in English - Take the National Roman Civilization Exam - 50 multiple-choice questions in 45 minutes on Roman history and society from 753 BC through Constantine - Take the National Latin Vocabulary Exam or the National Hellenic Civilization Exam in the spring window - Register through your teacher on the exam platform, sitting whichever exams suit your background - Compete within your award level: Novice (grade 8 and below), Intermediate (grades 9-10) or Advanced (grades 11-12) ## Who Should Apply NJCL states the Roman Civilization exam is "generally meant for grades 6-12, but students of any grade level are allowed to participate." The etymology exam in particular suits students with no Latin coursework at all - it rewards English vocabulary built on classical roots. ## Outcomes Scores are ranked nationally against published cut-off scores and recognized within Junior Classical League chapters and classics departments. Fees run $7 per student for online administration ($6 for ACL members) plus a school registration fee, making these among the least expensive national academic exams available.
