What Is Cardiothoracic Surgical Skills and Education?
Stanford Medicine's CSSEC teaches high-school students cardiothoracic anatomy, physiology, disease, diagnostics, clinical surgery, and hands-on technical skills. Each weekday combines live lectures from 9 a.m.-noon Pacific with coached skills practice from 1-4 p.m.; tutorials and office hours add time. Students use mailed instruments and simulators to practice knots, instrument handling, incisions, suturing, vessel anastomosis, bypass, valve and aortic techniques, and heart anatomy while instructors give camera-based feedback.
Summer 2027 is fully virtual and open internationally. Sessions run June 21-July 2 and July 12-23. Applications open January 4 and close March 12; the USD 4,500 fee includes educational supplies, and applying costs a nonrefundable USD 95.
