RSI vs MITES Summer: the short answer
Same campus, same six weeks, same year of high school — and both cover the summer except your travel to and from MIT. The difference is what you do there. RSI is research: a week of classes, then a five-week internship on an individual project with a mentor, ending in a paper and a symposium talk; it accepts less than 2.5% of applicants, requires PSAT, SAT or ACT scores from U.S. students, and charges a $75 application fee. MITES Summer is a course load: one math, one life sciences, one physics, one humanities and one project-based elective, with midterms and finals but no grades or credit, and a written evaluation from each instructor at the end. It strongly encourages students who are underrepresented or underserved in STEM, evaluates every eligible applicant regardless of race or ethnicity, makes test scores optional, and takes only U.S. citizens and permanent residents. The calendars differ too: RSI's deadline is in December, MITES's on February 1. Juniors who fit both can apply to both.

Inside RSI
One week of seminars, then a lab. Your mentor assigns the project at the end of the first week, and from the second week through the fifth you are in the lab on it, with an evening lecture series alongside. The summer ends in a written paper and a talk at the RSI Symposium, and the RSI Director writes a college recommendation for every student.
Inside MITES Summer
A semester of college in six weeks. You live in an MIT dorm for the whole program, even if you are local, and take five courses — placement into math, life sciences and physics comes from a knowledge inventory at orientation — with midterms in week 3, finals in week 6 and a final project presented at the closing symposium. Days run 9 am-5 pm; evenings go to homework and office hours, weekends to exploring Boston, and there is college admissions counseling throughout.
Choose RSI if…
- You want to do research, not coursework. RSI is five weeks of individual research with a mentor; MITES Summer is five courses, one of them a project elective.
- You are not a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. RSI takes international students from participating countries; MITES does not.
Choose MITES Summer if…
- You are underrepresented or underserved in STEM, or the first in your family to go to college. MITES strongly encourages these applicants, and adds admissions and financial aid advice to the summer.
- Your test scores are not your strength. MITES makes scores optional; RSI requires them from U.S. students.
