What Is Research Science Institute?
The Center for Excellence in Education's Research Science Institute brings 100 outstanding U.S. and international high-school students to MIT for six weeks of advanced STEM study and original research. Students begin with intensive scientific-theory and research-method coursework, then work with mentors in university, hospital, research, or industry settings, write a formal research paper, and present their results. Attendance, housing, meals, and local program transportation are cost-free, although the application has a $60 fee with waiver requests available.
Applicants are ordinarily midway through grade 11, preparing for their final secondary-school year. The application requires academic records, expected U.S. standardized-test scores, and two or three detailed STEM recommendations. International participation is limited to countries selected by CEE and may use country-specific procedures. The completed 2026 session ran June 28-August 8. The RSI 2027 U.S. and international CEE application portals are open, with a December 11, 2026 cutoff at 11:59 p.m. EST. International candidates should also check their country-specific selection or nomination timetable. The 2027 program dates and participating-country list remain unconfirmed in the inspected sources.
