What Is U.S. Department of State Student Internship?
This is a paid, postsecondary internship—not a grade 11-12 high-school program. Eligible U.S. citizens who are undergraduate juniors or seniors or graduate students can gain substantive foreign-affairs experience in Washington, D.C., other U.S. offices, a limited number of New York City placements, or selected embassies and field offices abroad. Duties can include attending government meetings, drafting cables and reports, supporting international events, and communicating U.S. policy and culture.
Applicants need a minimum 3.2 GPA, must be able to receive the required public-trust or security clearance, and must return to school immediately after the internship. Interns are temporary federal employees paid at GS-04 Step 1; reasonable travel is covered and housing assistance is available. The Department says future-cycle updates are forthcoming. When a vacancy opens, applicants apply through Gateway to State/USAJOBS using Resume Builder and attach a current transcript.
