What Is Mikva Challenge Summer Fellows?
Mikva Challenge Summer Fellows is a paid six-week public-service internship for young people after senior year, distinct from Mikva's Citywide Youth Councils and Youth Organizing Academy for current younger students. Fellows work in city, county, state, or federal public offices and join weekly Mikva workshops on government, community, goal setting, leadership, workplace readiness, and reflection. It is a local employment program, not a nationwide virtual fellowship.
For summer 2026, the Cook County branch placed approximately 50 young people across Chicago-area public offices for 30 hours per week over six weeks and paid $17 per hour through an Illinois Department of Human Services Youth Investment Program partnership. A Lake County branch also provided paid placements but did not publish the wage in the accessible form. Placement office, elected official, duties, schedule, and location depend on the branch and employer; applicants cannot assume a particular office, politician, level of government, or policy assignment.
