What Is Health & Environment Scholars @Duke?
It is not a general Duke summer program called “Environmental Science & Policy Scholars.” HESP is a free, year-long, in-person environmental science and health program for Durham Public Schools high-school students, with an emphasis on students from backgrounds historically underrepresented in STEM. Duke's Nicholas School of the Environment and School of Medicine run it with Durham Public Schools and Duke partners.
Duke confirms that HESP will continue in fall 2026-spring 2027 with 17 in-person sessions. The planned two-module curriculum combines college/career preparation, speakers, and near-peer undergraduate mentorship with environmental-health topics, field and laboratory experiences, pollutants, biodiversity, environmental justice, and a culminating Hackathon pitch. Prior cohorts visited the Duke Marine Lab, Eno River, Duke Forest, and Duke Campus Farm.
