What Is Summer Academic Research Experience (SARE)?

Johns Hopkins' Summer Academic Research Experience combines biomedical laboratory research with writing, mathematics, data-analysis and bioethics learning for eligible high-school students from low-income and educationally under-resourced backgrounds. The eligibility section requires household income not exceeding 200% of the federal poverty limit, plus an additional educational-background or individual-circumstance criterion; its mission statement instead prints less than 200%. Consult the application’s household-size table to resolve the boundary.

The 2026 programme ran June 22–August 13 on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with applications due March 1, 2026. Successful 2026 completers were offered a $3,000 stipend. The page's open-application wording does not establish a new cycle. Confirm future dates, eligibility, pay, application documents and transport arrangements; the programme explicitly cannot provide housing. Research publication depends on actual contributions and is not guaranteed.
