What Is Kentucky Governor's School for Entrepreneurs?
Summer Startup is a free three-week residential entrepreneurship program for Kentucky 9th-, 10th-, and 11th-graders. Students live at the University of Kentucky, form complementary teams of no more than five, generate a fresh problem/venture idea, conduct discovery, build and test a product or service, learn from entrepreneurs and mentors, and pitch their work. GSE does not consider GPA or standardized-test scores; it evaluates skills, drive, experiences, passion, creativity, resilience, teamwork, and statewide representation.
The 2026 program ran June 20–July 12 and is complete. Its application closed January 18 at 11 p.m. Eastern, and recommendations were due January 23. The next application has not opened. The application required a 90-second video, short responses, parent/guardian permission, and two non-family/non-friend recommendations. Students commit to the full residential term. GSE completion can qualify graduates for scholarship offers from participating Kentucky institutions, but no admission or scholarship amount is guaranteed.
