What Is Kitty Andersen Youth Science Center?
The Science Museum of Minnesota's Kitty Andersen Youth Science Center (KAYSC) is a multi-year out-of-school pathway in STEM, leadership, career readiness, civic engagement, and social justice. Youth may begin with service learning in grade 7, progress to paid Museum employment in high school, and continue into post-secondary internships or staff roles.
High-school participants are Museum employees in grades 9-12, approximately ages 15-18. They work in one of four broad areas: Biological Sciences and Public Health, Media and Technology, Environmental Sciences and Sustainability, or Engineering and Design. Participants build technical and workplace skills through hands-on projects, collaborate with peers, address community challenges, and mentor younger KAYSC members. Young-adult crew managers design activities and provide direct mentorship.
