MathWorks Math Modeling Challenge (M3 Challenge)

Organization: Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM)

Program Overview

A free, internet-based applied math modeling competition for high school teams in the U.S., U.K. and select countries, sponsored by MathWorks.

MathWorks Math Modeling Challenge (M3 Challenge) is a free, internet-based applied mathematics competition organized by the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) and sponsored by MathWorks. High school juniors and seniors (and sixth form students in the U.K.) work in teams of 3–5 to tackle a real-world problem using mathematical modeling, data analysis, and computational tools. Teams choose a single continuous 14-hour period on a designated challenge weekend to download the problem, develop their model, and submit a written solution paper. The competition is open to schools in the United States (including territories), the United Kingdom, and some additional invited international locations, with each team supervised by a teacher-coach. Participants gain experience in applying math to realistic, socially relevant issues, collaborating under time pressure, and communicating technical results clearly. Top teams can earn scholarship awards, recognition from SIAM and MathWorks, and opportunities to present their work at the final event.
