What Is MediaWise Teen Fact-Checking Network?

The TFCN is MediaWise's virtual newsroom for middle- and high-school students who debunk viral misinformation and teach media-literacy skills through social media. U.S. teens work remotely with Poynter's MediaWise team; international editions are operated with country partners and do not share one global application.

Teen fact-checkers identify claims, research them with search engines, databases, public records, original documentation, and outreach to relevant parties, write scripts, and propose ratings. A MediaWise editor reviews the evidence and rating, a second staff member reviews the edited script, and unresolved decisions can go to the program director. After approval, the teen records the piece; staff review it again before publishing it on the student's behalf. The network produces social-media fact checks and the “Is This Legit?” YouTube series under standards of accuracy, nonpartisanship, transparency, audience awareness, and a safe community for ages 13+.
