# Michigan Science Center Explainers Explainers is a paid, school-year-long opportunity at the Michigan Science Center (Mi-Sci) in Detroit's Midtown. High schoolers are hired to learn how a working science center runs and to bring its exhibits and shows to life for the public, building STEM communication and leadership skills along the way. ## What You'll Do - Complete 10 weeks of training across four pathways: exhibits, stage shows, theaters, and guest services - Choose one pathway to focus on and work alongside experienced Mi-Sci staff mentors - Guide visitors through exhibits and support live science shows - Work about seven hours per week — two days per week in July and August, then Saturdays from September through December — earning approximately $13 per hour - Graduate from the Explainers' Project in early December ## Who Should Apply Detroit-area students in grades 10-12 who enjoy science and want real work experience talking about it. No prior museum or performance experience is required; the training year is the point. Applications for each cohort typically open in May (the 2026 cohort is filled; the next application round is expected in 2027). ## Outcomes Explainers finish with a paid line on their resume, a year of mentored public-speaking and STEM-communication practice, exposure to science-career pathways, and a professional network inside one of Michigan's flagship science institutions.
