What Is Michigan Science Center Explainers?
Explainers is a paid Michigan Science Center youth-employment and development program for Detroit-area high-school students in grades 10–12. No previous STEM experience is required. Explainers learn museum operations and public engagement while guiding visitors through exhibits, supporting live shows, theaters, and guest services, answering questions, and helping guests explore science.
The program begins with ten weeks of training across four pathways—exhibits, stage shows, theaters, and guest services—before each participant focuses on one. Explainers work alongside Mi-Sci staff and at least one mentor, attend at least two STEM or entrepreneurship exposure visits, complete at least five service hours, build public-speaking and leadership skills, independently facilitate at least one show, program, or task, and present a final showcase. Graduates may later have an opportunity to join the Education Team as Educators, but employment is not guaranteed.
