What Is AmeriCorps Martin Luther King Jr. Day?
MLK Day of Service is a nationwide civic-service campaign led by AmeriCorps, observed on the third Monday in January. It is not one centrally operated student program. Independent nonprofits, schools, faith-based groups, governments, and community organizations publish individual projects through partner platforms; each project has its own work, location, hours, capacity, registration, age limits, adult-supervision rules, waivers, accessibility, and service-hour documentation.
The next federal observance falls January 18, 2027, but AmeriCorps has not published one universal volunteer deadline or a complete fixed catalog of 2027 projects. Opportunities are added locally and may be in person or remote, require advance registration, fill early, permit walk-ins, or span dates near the holiday. Volunteers should open the actual host listing and verify every requirement rather than treating AmeriCorps' organizational grant deadline as an individual signup deadline.
