What Is M.A.N.G.A.: Michigan's Accelerated NihonGo?

Michigan State University's M.A.N.G.A. program lets gifted students complete four years of high-school Japanese in a three-year, six-semester sequence. Students apply in grades 6-9, start with Japanese 1, and progress through Japanese 4 and then JLPT/AP Japanese preparation. The current 2026-2027 Year 1 class is online, with a tentative Monday 6:30-9 p.m. live class and Saturday virtual study labs; all Year 1 students attend three labs per semester. Coursework is rigorous, attendance is mandatory, and MSU says students should expect an average of two to three hours per day on classwork and homework.

Tuition is $2,349 per year. The application fee is $75 before March 1 and $95 afterward, with no refunds. Need-based scholarships and school/district support may be available under separate rules. The live program page gives a special M.A.N.G.A.-only deadline of August 21, 2026, but no closing time; older general pages that show June or July dates are superseded for this program.
