What Is National Individual Events Tournament?
NIETOC is an annual, qualification-based national speech championship for high-school students. Its main events are Dramatic Interpretation, Humorous Interpretation, Duo Interpretation, Original Oratory, Informative Speaking, Program Oral Interpretation, United States Extemp, and International Extemp. Students may enter at most two main events under flight restrictions; Extemp competitors may use only one Extemp division but may also enter another event. The tournament includes preliminary and elimination rounds, judging, awards, and scholarships for main-event champions and the top individual performer.
Students do not simply pay a universal $300 fee and receive an invitation. They first qualify under that season's rules. In 2026 the pathways included automatic qualification from specified national/state finishes, two bids earned in the same event at NIETOC-designated tournaments, capacity-limited at-large review based on three ranked results, and limited bonus access to supplemental events. A school/coach then registered qualified entries through SpeechWire, supplied results documentation, paid per-entry fees, and met judge and legal-document requirements. No organization membership was required to earn bids, but junior-high students were ineligible.
