# Young Civil War Historians Conference Gettysburg College's Civil War Institute holds its annual summer conference for historians and enthusiasts on campus each June, and the Young Civil War Historians Conference runs alongside it as a dedicated track for high school students. Participants get access to leading Civil War historians and to sessions built specifically for teenagers, plus battlefield programming that only a college sitting on the Gettysburg battlefield can offer. ## What You'll Do - Research using original documents, photographs, and artifacts from the Civil War era - Walk the ground of Pickett's Charge and stand where Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address - Study Civil War photography and Civil War medicine with specialist instructors - Attend selected sessions of the Institute's national summer conference alongside adult scholars - Live in Gettysburg College residence halls for the week ## Who Should Apply Rising high school juniors and seniors with a serious interest in the Civil War era. The camp fee is $1,395 plus a $50 nonrefundable application fee, covering all activities, tours, room, and board; a limited number of $500 scholarships are awarded to students who submit a one- to two-page letter about their interest in Civil War history plus a social studies teacher's recommendation. Scholarship recipients are not required to bring chaperones. ## Outcomes Students leave with primary-source research experience, sustained contact with professional historians, and a residential college program on their record - useful preparation for National History Day projects and for history-focused college applications.
