National Tournament of Academic Excellence

Organization: Florida Department of Education

Program Overview

A four-day national quiz bowl tournament for top high school academic teams, formerly hosted at Walt Disney World in Florida.

The National Tournament of Academic Excellence (NTAE) was a prestigious national quiz-style competition organized by the Florida Department of Education for high school academic teams. Held annually for many years in Florida (often at Walt Disney World), the event brought together state- and regional-champion teams from across the United States to compete in a multi-day tournament using a unique, multi-level question format. Participation was typically by invitation or state-level qualification, with teams generally composed of high school students in grades 9–12 representing their schools, districts, or states. While it is no longer an active, regularly run tournament in its classic form, NTAE is often referenced historically in the quiz bowl community as an influential national event that helped popularize rigorous, team-based academic competition and provided students with opportunities to demonstrate knowledge, build teamwork skills, and gain recognition at a national level.
