# NAQT National Academic Championship (NASAT) The National Academic Quiz Tournaments (NAQT) Scholastic Academic Tournament (NASAT) is the premier national championship for high school quiz bowl, bringing together the top scholastic bowl teams from across the United States to compete in a fast-paced, high-stakes academic buzzer competition covering every major subject of human knowledge. For students who love knowing things—about history, science, literature, mathematics, art, philosophy, music, and current events—NASAT is the ultimate test. ## What Is Quiz Bowl? Quiz bowl (also called scholastic bowl or academic challenge) is an academic competition format in which teams of students answer tossup questions (buzzed in individually) and bonus questions (answered collaboratively) across a comprehensive range of academic subjects. Unlike trivia—which rewards trivia knowledge—quiz bowl is designed around the academic curriculum, drawing from the same subjects students study in school: history, literature, science, fine arts, philosophy, religion, mythology, social science, and mathematics. Quiz bowl rewards: - Breadth of academic knowledge across many subjects - Quick pattern-recognition (questions are read progressively, rewarding recognition of distinctive clues) - Team coordination and strategy - Deep reading and independent study habits ## About NAQT National Academic Quiz Tournaments (NAQT) is one of the two major quiz bowl organizations in the U.S. (alongside the High School Academic Pyramid Questions consortium). NAQT produces the Scholastic Championship Series (SCS)—a national invitational circuit—and the NASAT, which serves as NAQT's national championship. ## The NASAT Championship NASAT takes place each spring (typically May or June) at a university campus. Qualification routes include: - **State championships**: Many states run NAQT-affiliated state championships, with the top teams earning bids to NASAT - **Invitational circuits**: Strong performance at NAQT-affiliated invitationals throughout the year At NASAT, teams compete in round-robin preliminary rounds followed by single-elimination playoff brackets, ultimately crowning a national champion. **Format:** - 20-tossup, 20-bonus format per match - Subjects distributed across: Literature (15%), History (15%), Science (15%), Fine Arts (10%), Religion/Philosophy/Mythology (10%), Social Science (10%), Current Events (5%), Mathematics (5%), Other (15%) ## Who Should Get Involved? Quiz bowl is ideal for: - Students who love reading and learning across many subjects - Students who are frustrated that school doesn't reward breadth of knowledge - Students who enjoy trivia and academic competition - Students who want a team academic competition distinct from science olympiad or math competitions Quiz bowl teams exist at schools of all types—large and small, urban and rural. If your school doesn't have a quiz bowl team, starting one is straightforward: NAQT provides startup resources and can connect you with coaches. ## College Application Value NASAT qualification signals exceptional academic breadth and competitive achievement. College admissions readers—particularly at selective liberal arts colleges and research universities—recognize national-level academic competition. Many quiz bowl alumni at Harvard, MIT, and other top schools note quiz bowl as central to their intellectual development. ## Getting Started Visit the NAQT website to find your state's quiz bowl association and affiliated tournaments. Practice sets are available free online; many teams use the online QuizBowlPackets archive for practice.
