What Is New England Conservatory Preparatory School?
NEC Prep is a portfolio of non-degree music offerings, not one uniform selective high-school program. Families may choose private lessons, classes, orchestras, wind, jazz, choral and chamber ensembles, early-childhood programs, or certificate pathways at New England Conservatory in Boston. The 2026-27 catalog serves students from early childhood through age 18, with some family or older-participant exceptions. Many activities meet on Saturdays, but schedules differ by selection.
Enrollment has two routes. Registration-based offerings require no audition; placement-based offerings require a Parent Portal application plus recorded or live audition materials specific to the instrument or ensemble. The main May 15 and August 1 placement deadlines have passed, but NEC says 2026-27 registration remains open and late placement applications may be considered if space remains. Tuition varies widely: published offerings begin at $320 per session, year-long groups generally cost $1,250-$2,200, and lesson packages range from $2,550 to $10,800 before higher-rate instructors. Placement applications cost $40 and annual registration costs $50. Aid is available, with 27% of Prep students receiving some support; a few named ensembles are tuition-free, but NEC Prep as a whole is not.
