CANE Writing Contest

# CANE Writing Contest The Classical Association of New England runs an annual writing contest for secondary students studying Latin, Greek or classics. Entries are submitted by teachers to their state's CANE representative, judged at the state level, and the top state entries then compete across the New England region. Although CANE is a regional association, the contest explicitly accepts students from outside New England, who are judged in their own regional category. ## What You'll Do - Write a response to the year's published contest prompt, released by CANE each fall - Submit your entry through your Latin, Greek or classics teacher to your state's CANE representative - Compete first against other students in your state, then against the top entries from across New England - Read your winning piece aloud at CANE's Annual Meeting in the spring if you take the regional prize - See past winning entries and winner lists published by the association ## Who Should Apply "The CANE Writing Contest is an annual event open to students taking Latin, Greek, or Classics in middle and high schools in or outside of New England." Middle schoolers are explicitly included, which is unusual among classics writing competitions. Because entries go through a teacher, students should ask their classics teacher to contact the CANE state representative. ## Outcomes Winners receive state and regional prizes from a scholarly association founded in 1906, and the regional winner presents publicly at CANE's Annual Meeting in front of classics teachers and college faculty from across the region - a rare speaking credential for a secondary student in the field.
