What Is Science Olympiad Division B?
Division B is Science Olympiad's middle-school competition, primarily for grades 6-9. A member school fields a team of up to 15 students, with no more than five 9th graders. Students divide a broad slate of paired STEM events, preparing knowledge, laboratory, inquiry, coding, and engineering-build work for invitational, regional, and state tournaments. Qualifying state champions advance to the National Tournament.
The 2027 event slate is already posted and includes Anatomy & Physiology, Disease Detectives, Heredity, Botany, Dynamic Planet, Meteorology, Rocks and Minerals, Solar System, Water Quality, Circuit Lab, Crime Busters, Food Science, Codebusters, Experimental Design, Write It Do It, Hovercraft, Boomilever, Elastic Launch Glider, Roller Coaster, and Scrambler, plus trial events. The detailed 2027 rules release as free PDFs on September 8, 2026; teams must use the current rules and later corrections/clarifications.
