What Is Summer High School Internship Program (SHIP)?
SHIP is a competitive seven-week, unpaid educational internship at NIST's Boulder, Colorado and Gaithersburg, Maryland campuses. Interns work in person with NIST scientists and engineers on an individual research problem and finish with a poster session. The 2026 cycle ran June 22-August 7 and is closed. NIST expects 2027 applications to open in mid-October 2026 and close at the end of January 2027. These are broad expected periods; the exact closing day, cutoff clock and summer dates are not announced. The linked 2026 timeline does not establish a January 2027 deadline.
Applicants must be U.S. citizens, be high-school juniors or seniors at application (or have just graduated and not started college), have at least a 3.0 unweighted GPA, show strong scientific-research interest, commit to all seven weeks, and maintain a permanent home within 50 miles of the host campus. Families must provide housing and daily transportation; NIST says no exceptions will be made.
