What Is USA Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO)?
The USAMO is an invite-only national proof-based mathematics competition administered by the Mathematical Association of America. Students cannot apply directly. The pathway begins when a school or other approved competition site enrolls a student in the AMC 10 or AMC 12. Exceptional AMC performance earns an AIME invitation, and a combined AMC/AIME qualification process determines USAMO or USAJMO invitations. If a student qualifies for both, MAA invites the student to USAMO.
The next USAMO/USAJMO is scheduled for March 20-21, 2027. Exact AIME dates, qualification indexes and cutoffs, invitation rules, sites, times, permitted materials, travel support, and result procedures are not yet announced. In 2026, approximately the top 11% of AIME participants were invited across the two Olympiads; that is historical, not a 2027 cutoff. The latest format used six proof problems over two synchronous 4.5-hour days at assigned sites, with no makeup.
