What Is Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering?
WYSE is The Grainger College of Engineering's pre-college STEM outreach umbrella, not a single statewide test competition with one application, price or award. Its current portfolio includes engineering summer camps, the Young Scholars Summer STEMM Research Program, Chicago and community programs, robotics and STEM events, educator programs, and support for team events such as Illinois Science Olympiad and FIRST. Students must choose an individual offering and follow that offering's eligibility and application rules.
The completed 2026 engineering camps served rising grades 7-12 in program-specific ranges. Standard prices were $1,500 residential, $750 commuter or $550 day camp, each plus a $25 deposit, with 50% and 100% Trail Blazer scholarships for qualifying accepted applicants. The separate Young Scholars research program served rising grades 10-12 from seven Midwestern states, charged selected students no program fee beyond transportation and paid a fellowship; it required an educator recommendation and was highly selective.
