# Alpha Workshop for Young Writers Alpha is the science fiction, fantasy, and horror workshop for young writers: an intensive residential program that brings together 20 teens each summer on the University of Pittsburgh Greensburg campus. Admission is decided solely on the strength of an original speculative short story, judged anonymously. The 2026 workshop runs July 15-26. ## What You'll Do - Draft and workshop new speculative fiction in a close-knit cohort of 20 writers - Learn craft from published science fiction, fantasy, and horror authors on staff - Give and receive detailed peer critique in a supportive, inclusive environment - Live on campus for the full session; tuition covers all meals and lodging ## Who Should Apply Writers ages 14-19 (inclusive) on the first day of the workshop who love speculative fiction. Applicants submit one original sci-fi, fantasy, or horror story of 2,000-6,000 words during the annual application window (February 1 - March 1 in 2026). Alpha describes itself as a safe, inclusive space for neurodivergent and gender-diverse teens. ## Outcomes Alumni leave with a completed, workshopped story, professional critique skills, mentorship from working genre authors, and a lasting writing community. Tuition is $1,950, with scholarships available including two full-tuition awards (the Tamora Pierce Scholarship and a BIPOC student scholarship).
