What Is Alpha Workshop for Young Writers?
Alpha is a 12-day residential science-fiction, fantasy, and horror writing workshop for a cohort of 20 writers ages 14-19 at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg. Students learn from professional authors and volunteer staff through craft lectures, brainstorming, writing studios, individual guidance, readings, and intensive peer critique while drafting and revising original speculative fiction.
Admission is based solely on an anonymized original short story of 2,000-6,000 words. The completed 2026 session ran July 15-26 after a February 1-March 1 application. Tuition was $1,950, with no application fee; scholarships, financial aid, and loaner laptops were available, and financial information did not affect admission. Applicants under 18 needed parent confirmation and consent.
