What Is AU High School Summer Scholars?
American University's High School Summer Scholars program offers rigorous, four-week, self-paced online courses taught by AU faculty. In summer 2026, rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors with at least a 3.0 GPA used Canvas for readings, recorded lectures, podcasts, documentaries, discussion boards, writing, and assignments. Faculty remained available by email and optional Zoom or Skype office hours. Each course required about five to ten hours per week and earned one AU college credit, usually for a letter grade, plus eligibility to request an official AU transcript. The receiving college decides whether to accept transfer credit.
The completed 2026 term ran June 22-July 17. Tuition was $1,044 per course, all required readings/materials were included, and AU charged a $100 nonrefundable deposit after acceptance. The public wording does not clearly say whether that deposit was credited to tuition, so the two amounts remain separate instead of being silently combined or netted. Rising grade 10-12 students could take more than one course with permission, up to three. International applicants were welcome with an equivalent GPA, transcript, and generally a TOEFL iBT score of at least 80 when English-language proof was required.
