What Is Summer Linguistic Institute for Youth?
Ohio State's SLIYS is a synchronous virtual program for students worldwide who are entering grades 9-12, typically ages 13-18. SLIYS 1 introduces phonetics, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, language documentation, and related foundations through lectures, interactive analysis, daily elicitation with a speaker of an unfamiliar language, research discussions, and faculty/alumni panels. Returning scholars may add SLIYS 2 for advanced topics that change with instructor expertise.
In 2026, each one-week session met live for five hours on each weekday and cost $550. SLIYS 1 ran June 8-12 or July 6-10; SLIYS 2 ran June 22-26 or July 20-24 and required completion of SLIYS 1. Attendance was expected every day and sessions could not be recorded. A laptop or desktop, camera, microphone, headphones, and quiet room were required. Need-based aid was available by request, and disability accommodations could be disclosed without affecting selection.
