What Is California Young Playwrights Contest?
Playwrights Project's annual statewide contest invites Californians under age 19 to submit original, unpublished plays. The 2026 cycle accepted individual, collaborative, and group scripts of 6-40 typed pages, read anonymously by theatre professionals. The organization says the cycle is closed and asks applicants to check back for 2027 details.
Winning writers revise with a professional dramaturg or writing mentor and participate with directors, designers, and actors. Winners age 15 or older receive a full professional production; younger winners receive a staged reading by professional actors. 2026 winners are to be produced in San Diego in Spring 2027. Entrants could request a written evaluation in their cover letter.
