What Is Cum Laude Society Student Membership?

The Cum Laude Society is an active secondary-school academic honor society founded in 1906 and modeled after Phi Beta Kappa. It has roughly 380 chapters, mostly at U.S. independent schools with additional public-school and international chapters, and reports about 4,000 student inductions annually. A student can be considered only through a chapter at the student's own school; the national application form is for schools, not individuals.

A chapter may elect up to 20% of its senior class in the college-preparatory curriculum with an academic honor record. Up to half may be selected at the end of junior year or during senior year, with the balance at the end of senior year. Chapters may elect fewer, define their own honor-record threshold and selection method, and are expected to consider academic excellence, good character, honor, and integrity. The Society explicitly distinguishes selection from awards for service, extracurricular activity, citizenship, or athletics.
